About Us

Nitty Gritty Tile and Trades is owned and operated by Lexi Freylersythe. She hails from the west coast, born and raised in Portland, OR. She completed the bulk of her training in fine remodeling in the stately homes of southeast Portland, where she learned to provide professional, high-quality finishes while respecting the quirks, character, and unique qualities of a home.

If you're looking for a general contractor with exceptional attention to detail, a quality builder, a remodeler who is always looking for a way to meet new challenges with creative, cogent solutions, you've found her. She's not your standard 'handyman' (handyperson? handylady? handygal?). With a background in chemistry and physical sciences, you can be confident you're home is being given the careful consideration of a scientist!

Lexi and her wife, Grey, relocated to Burlington, VT, in spring 2024 and began getting to know this beautiful state. Lexi is passionate about bringing her unique perspective to your project, and increasing the visibility of women in the trades. After all - it's hard to be what you can't see! Learn more about why women in the trades matters below.

Women in the Trades
Why Representation Matters
How This Affects You
It is well-established at this point that Vermont has a housing crisis, and not enough builders to maintain existing or build new homes. According to the US Department of Commerce, if women entered and stayed in the trades--particularly construction--there could be enough workers to meet that demand. Unfortunately, many barriers for women entering the trades still exist, including worksite harassment, hiring discrimination, and lack of training opportunities. Actively encouraging and supporting women to enter the trades will benefit all Vermonters!
Other Benefits

According to the National Center for Construction Education and Research, women in the trades have greater

  • Attention to detail
  • Multitasking abilities
  • Procedural and process adherence
  • Job site and process organization
  •  Prioritizing of safety
  • Communication
  • Cooperation and collaboration skills
All of this means that you will be hiring a professional who brings all of these qualities and more to the job every day.

You'll be asked thoughtful questions that allow Lexi to understand your project's needs as well as your preferences.

You'll receive a detailed project proposal, regular updates, and periodic check-ins to make sure the project is going as you expected.

Although construction can be messy, noisy, and distracting, you can be assured that Lexi will be a respectful house guest who keeps a tidy job site, communicates about  when she'll be on site, and pays attention to the little details (like wiping down door handles, or using dust-management methods).

Finally, you'll get a high-quality product, because Lexi specializes in the nitty and gritty details that make all the difference.
